The graph on the left-hand side shows the typical usage profile of a UK household per month over a 12 month period i.e what we buy from the grid, electricity usage varies from day to day, week to week or month to month.

The below system has been built using PV Sol Premium 2018 which is a specialist Solar specification software designed to show returns or generation and system compliance. The hardware used was eighteen Qcell 290 Watt Solar Panels with a Solaredge inverter and optimisers, facing due South, using the weather data from Meteosyn, using Plymouth Mount Batten weather data, with no shade. The battery is a Pylontech x 3 and using a Sofar AC inverter. The consumption data has been taken from PV Sol and is classed as a typical house usage throughout a 365 day period, using 4000kWh per year at a unit rate of 16pence per kWh.

So you will see from the graph below that it has four main colour coded areas, the grey colour highlights the overall usage of the property and what you would normally pay for if you didn’t have solar. The yellow colour shows the solar generation and self-consumption i.e. Using the solar power directly into the home when the panels are generating. The blue is what you purchase from the grid and green is what you haven’t used at the time of solar generation and has been sent to the battery to be used later to i.e. Overnight.
